Arriving at Central Wyoming Regional Airport in Riverton means nearby cities such as Lander, Thermopolis, and Dubois are all an easy drive away. Riverton sits in the Wind River Basin, surrounded by the Wind River Indian Reservation and framed by the Wind River Range to the west and the Owl Creek Mountains to the north. It is a ranching and energy town with a friendly, practical feel and some of the best access to wild country in Wyoming. Standout experiences around Riverton: - Attend a powwow or cultural event hosted by the Eastern Shoshone or Northern Arapaho tribes - Visit the Riverton Museum for the story of homesteaders and the Wind River country - Fish and boat on Boysen Reservoir, a half hour north - Hike Sinks Canyon State Park near Lander, where the Popo Agie River disappears underground - Drive the Wind River Canyon, a dramatic gorge cut through the mountains toward Thermopolis - Watch the Riverton Rendezvous and its hot air balloon rally each July - Climb or hike in the Wind River Range from the trailheads near Lander - Float the Wind River on a summer afternoon Riverton is a natural base for central Wyoming. Lander and its rock-climbing scene are 25 minutes south, Thermopolis and the free Hot Springs State Park pools are about an hour north, and Dubois, a log-cabin town on the road to Grand Teton, is about 80 minutes northwest. Casper is two hours east. Order a bison burger, watch the sun set behind the Winds, and plan an early start for the mountains.
